God and Your Desires
by Peter Salemi
What do you desire to have? Is it wrong to want things and ask God for them? Many Christians believe that their desires are somehow evil or contrary to God's will. The truth is, the desires that you have are good and have been given to mankind by God himself.
Desires are not the problem. What people do with, or how the get the things they want and desire IS! For example, people desire money. Now how we obtain money is the important factor. We can ask God for it. But what are your intentions? Hoard it? Gamble it? Or Multiply it, make more and help people with your wealth? James wrote, "Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not...Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." (James 4:2-3).
David says, "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart...Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (Psalm 37:4-5). God will give you your desires if you "commit" your way to his will which is for your good and the good of mankind. John wrote, "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:" (1 John 5:14). If our desires line up with the will of God, then God will hear our prayers and give us the desires we want. Channel your desires to glorify God and honour him.
Jesus himself said, "...Have faith in God....For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith...Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." (Mark 11:22-24). As long as your desire align with the will of God- the sky is the limit! Also, these desires you can enjoy them with all your heart "Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God." (Eccl 5:19). It is a gift from God! Align with his will and enjoy the blessings according to the desires of your heart!
