The “seed in itself,”-A Hidden Spiritual Truth!
By Peter Salemi
In the beginning of creation, God in nature designed the trees and flowers, fruit and grains to reseed themselves and produce new crops, new flowers, new saplings etc. God created these plants with the seed already in them to bring forth more of their kind. (This solves the “chicken or the egg” dilemma). “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
“And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.” (Gen 1:11-12).
Today it is understood that this natural law which applies to fruit, also applies to the natural man and woman. This law represents a self-sustaining reproductive system that was designed and created by God. God created this one thing and this thing contains the built-in capability to reproduce indefinitely-sustaining the existence of a species. To man he said, “…Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Gen 1:28). God put in man this ability to reproduce after his kind and self-sustain his existence.
A Spiritual Truth
As the source of all being, God saturates His creation with spiritual truths and ideas! God said to man, “be fruitful.” A fruit is a living organism whose “seed is in itself.” The ability for a fruit to create, reproduce is inside the fruit.
Notice the spiritual principle shown in the natural process. Jesus likened the human mind like soil in a garden. Some hearts are hard, stony ground. Some are shallow and look good for a little while, and “the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” (Matthew 13:23).
Jeremiah says before a gardener can plant, he must prepare the soil. The Bible says that some hearts are hard. The Old Testament calls such hard, crusty soil “fallow ground” (Jer. 4:3). God commands to, “Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns…Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart..” (Jer 4:3-4).
Hosea 10:12 says the same, “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.”
The mind of man is the good ground prepared. What is that spiritual “seed in itself” that makes man create, reproduce and be fruitful? Wisdom and understanding! “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” (Job 32:8). The text here suggests that God planted this seed into the mind of man, when God gave him the breath of life. “‘The breathing’ of the Almighty - שׁדי נשׁמה neshâmâh Shadday. The idea was, that God breathed this into man, and that this wisdom was [in] the breath of God; compare Gen 2:7; John 20:22. Septuagint, πνοή pnoē, breath, breathing.” (Barnes Notes, emphasis added). God implanted in man his “inspiration” to act, and create-it is imbedded in man!
When God told man to be “fruitful” this does not just mean having children. Fruitful also means to be “Very productive; producing fruit in abundance; as fruitful soil; a fruitful tree; a fruitful season.” (King James Bible Dictionary, emphasis added). As Joseph said when he named his son “Ephraim” “And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.” (Gen 41:52). This is why God says to, “replenish [“fill” Gen 1:22; Be Very Productive in] the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion...”It is also about “filling,” creating, producing on this earth-multiplying abundantly, and making the earth bloom to its full potential! The mind of man at creation was prepared by God to be good soil so he could plant his creative quality and ability in man to be very productive and be fruitful.
The mind of man gives man the ability to create, reason, judge, communicate etc.… “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?” (1 Corinth 2:11). Since God is creator and we are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26); God has put in all of us an aspect [not all] of his creativity inside all of us, and we are to produce on the outside what God put on the inside! Clarke’s commentary rightly states, “The human mind is still endowed with most extraordinary capacities; it was more so when issuing out of the hands of its Creator. God was now producing a spirit, and a spirit, too, formed after the perfections of his own nature. God is the fountain whence this spirit issued, hence the stream must resemble the spring which produced it” (emphasis added).
What we must do is cultivate the seed of creativity that God put inside of us so we can be fruitful. What is your talent? What are you good at? What did God put inside of you that makes you do what you do? When you figure this out, you will be “fruitful” and “multiply.” Multiplication is the natural output of the input of fruitfulness. Seed planted does not have the ability to just grow one fruit. Nothing in nature grows by addition, it grows by multiplication! The word “multiply” means, “to increase” (Strong’s #7235). So we are to fill up, produce and multiply the earth with the things we create, this is our job! God is basically telling man that his life is supposed to be progressively productive. We must continue to get better, day by day, week by week, month by month, and year by year! The whole idea that the older you get, the more you become sicker, weaker and broker is abominable and is not part of God’s plan. I’m 54, and I know people my age or younger that act like they are hundred. I’m 54 I am only getting started!
What you Need is in God’s Word
Seed was made by God to produce and to produce after its own kind. That means that an apple seed will produce an apple tree, not a pear tree, because it produces its own kind.
God’s Word is seed (see Luke 8:11) and whatever you need, that seed of the Word will produce it. If you need healing, find healing Scriptures, plant them in your heart by speaking them, and reap a harvest of healing and wellness. If you need finances, sow money and sow Scriptures about provision and prosperity, and you will reap a harvest of finances. If you need friends, you have to be a friend. Start reaching out and sow seeds of kindness and friendship to others and soon you’ll have an abundance of friends. Focus on these things through Meditation as God instructed in the scriptures, “…meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Joshua 1:8).
The seeds we plant now determine our future, our lives. We are not powerless. God has given us the outcome before the beginning of a thing. Our seed determines our harvest and life. We must plant the seed we want for the life we desire. Whatever we sow, we reap. “for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” (Gal 6:7). The seed produces exactly the harvest it is designed to. Be selective in the seed you sow, because sowing and reaping works for both good seed and bad.
God is involved in our giving (sowing) and receiving (reaping). God can multiply what we give 30, 60, even 100 times. As we work with God, God will work with us. The little boy gave his two fish and five loaves to Jesus and He multiplied it. They took up more in the leftovers than they had to begin with. This shows that we can’t out-give God. He’s the greatest Giver, and we need to follow His example. God planted a Son and reaped a harvest of multiple children. So remember, “he which sows bountifully shall reap also bountifully” (AKJV)-this is the key to success!
