Persia in Bible Prophecy

Iran is the world greatest state sponsor of terrorism today. Iran now has a sizable military well equipped and able to strike anywhere it wishes. Iran is dedicated to “wiping Israel off the map” as well to destroy the “Great Satan,” the USA. What is Iran role in Bible Prophecy?

Iran dwells in the Old Persian Empire area. The term Persian, meaning “from Persia,” derives from Latin Persia, itself deriving from Greek Persís a Hellenized form of Old Persian Pārsa, which evolves into Fārs in modern Persian” (Harper, Douglas. “Persia” Online Etymology Dictionary).

“The Persians are an Iranian ethnic group that make up over half the population of Iran” (The World Fact Book, “Iran;” Country Prifile “Iran” Library of Congress – Federal Research Division. May 2008. Retrieved 30 April 2019, emphasis added).

Also, the name “Afghan” designates the Pashtun people since ancient times. These peoples were called a “tribe of Persians” (Travels in Asia and Africa, 1325-1354 (reprint, illustrated ed.). Routledge. 2004. p. 416). A total of 62 million “Pashtun” people in Afghanistan and they reside in western Pakistan as well (Wikipedia article “Iranian Peoples”). The Bulk of the Persians live in these areas, of Iran, Afghanistan and Western Pakistan, the same area as the ancient Persians that we read of in the Bible!

Modern Day Persians are the people of Iran Afghanistan & Western Pakistan

The Invasion of Afghanistan was the first time ever NATO invoked the article 5 of their charter which says, “An attack on any one of the 30 allies will be considered an attack on them all.” The attack on American soil by Al-Qaida was the final straw that caused all of the NATO allies to go into Afghanistan and wipe out Al-Qaida and the Taliban. So much of Today’s conflicts are centred on that region of the world. The Bible shows us that these events in Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan-which Al-Qaida and the Taliban were also stationed and hiding out, are leading to the end of the British and American powers, NATO and the EU.

This chapter is the longest prophecy in the Bible. “And at the time of the end” (v.40), it speaks of the King of the North and the King of the South conflict. In our booklet the “Middle East in Prophecy” we have identified the “King OF the North” as the President of the USA who leads the NORTH Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the King OF the South as Saddam Hussein who led a southern coalition called the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which included Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Saddam took control of this alliance and became the leader of it; at that time he had the “world’s ‘fourth largest army’” (Atlantic Monthly by Mark Bowden, May 2002). He was the King OF [not “in”] the South! Daniel 11:40-43 describes perfectly the Gulf War of 1990-91.


Daniel 11:40-43 prophesied that the King of the North (US Led NATO) would go to war with the King of the South (Saddam Hussein Led GCC Southern Alliance)

Then the scene shifts in verse 44. It says, “But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.” There are “tidings” or “reports” coming out of this region of the “east” and the “north.” This is a view from Palestine-East and North of Palestine! As Darby notes, “They are also territorially in relation with the Jews. It is on the territory of the latter [the Jews] that their wars are carried on. The history of the kings of these two monarchies, thus in conflict on the territory of Israel, is given with considerable detail under the names of king of the north and king of the south” (Synopsis of the Old and New Testaments, John Darby, emphasis added). This passage tells us a few things:

There are two Hebrew words used in the Bible for “east.” The first one is “kedem” (Strong’s#6924). This word basically “...with the article (Gen 10:30) expresses the definite country S, Arabia; ‘Sephara mount of the E.,’ a seaport on the coast of Hadramaut. More generally said of N. Arabia and Mesopotamia. Job1:3; ‘the children of the E.’ are mentioned with the Midianites and Amalekites (Jdg 6:3; Jdg 6:33; Jdg 7:12)” (Fausset Bible Dictionary, under “East.” emphasis added).

The other word used by Daniel, “Mizrach is used of the E. more indefinitely. The Greek plural anatolai, ‘the sunrisings,’ is used of the E. indefinitely, the eastern point of the compass (Mat 2:1)...” (Ibid). This eastward area was outside the Area of Assyria, Babylon and Arabia, “The term [kedem] as generally used refers to the lands lying immediately eastward of Palestine, namely, Arabia, Mesopotamia and Babylonia; on the other hand, mizrach, is used of the far east with a less definite signification...” (Smith Bible Dictionary, under “East” emphasis added).

The word “North” or Northward used by Daniel is, “(Heb. tsaphon), a ‘hidden’ or ‘dark place,’ as opposed to the sunny south (Deut 3:27). A Hebrew in speaking of the points of the compass was considered as always having his face to the east, and hence ‘the left hand’ (Gen 14:15; Job 23:9) denotes the north. The ‘kingdoms of the north’ are Chaldea, Assyria, Media, etc.” (Easton Bible Dictionary, under “Northward” emphasis added). Since the “east” as noted above means outside of the boundaries of Babylon and Assyria and the “north” is in conjunction with the “east” then the “north” can only mean the area of Media and beyond.

What are the lands eastward and northward outside of the boundaries of Babylon, Assyria? Most commentary’s generally agree the “North and East” is speaking of the Areas of Persia and Media. Is there proof of this?

Isaiah gives prophecies about Cyrus, the King of Persia and Media. The same Hebrew words used by Daniel are used of Cyrus’ location, “Who raised up the righteous man from the east [Heb. Mizrach], called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.

“I have raised up one from the north [Heb. tsaphon], and he shall come: from the rising of the sun [Heb. Mizrach] shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon mortar, and as the potter treadeth clay...Calling a ravenous bird from the east [Heb. Mizrach], the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.” (Isaiah 41:2, 25; 46:11). These passages point to of course Cyrus who was in Persia, exactly north and East of Babylon. Isaiah prophesied, “Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;” (Isaha 45:1).

The K& D Commentary explains the “ravenous bird” as, “The east is Persis (Isa 41:2); and the distant land, the northern part of Media (as in Isa 13:5). Cyrus is called an eagle, or, strictly speaking, a bird of prey ( ayit),” (emphasis added).

Barnes Comments as well, “There can be no doubt that Cyrus is intended here (see the notes at Isa 41:2, Isa 41:25). The east here means Persia. The word rendered ‘ravenous bird’ (òéè ayit#) is rendered ‘fowl’ in Job 28:7; ‘bird’ or ‘birds’ in Jer 12:9; ‘fowls’ in Gen 15:11; Isa 18:6; and ‘ravenous birds’ in Eze 39:4. It does not occur elsewhere in the Bible.... an emblem in either sense especially applicable to Cyrus.... Perhaps also there may be here allusion to the standard or banner of Cyrus. Xenophon (Cyrop. vii.) says that it was a golden eagle affixed to a long spear; and it is well remarked by Lowth, that Xenophon has used the very word which the prophet uses here, as near as could be, expressing it in Greek letters.” (Emphasis added). In these passages of Isaiah, the North and East clearly are meant to mean Persia and Media, and these same Hebrew words are used later by Daniel. The Old Medo-Persian lands today consist of modern-Day IRAN, AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN!

The Bible clearly shows that Persia is meant as the “East” and the “North” Palestine

Out of these areas the King of the North hears of “tidings” The word “Tidings” most translate as “reports.” Strong’s explains this word as meaning, “...something heard, that is, an announcement: - bruit, doctrine, fame, mentioned, news, report, rumor, tidings.” (#8052). The King of the North would receive announcements, reports, news or doctrines that were preached that would “trouble” him. We read of the “glad tidings” of the Kingdom of God! In this part of the world of the “east” and the “north” there are “tidings” that are “troubling” the western powers. Tidings or preaching of Jihad, a doctrine of Islam against the west; and them announcing that they were behind the attacks against the west; and that is exactly what the west, at that time was hearing and experiencing from the Al-Qaida network; and also Iran that continually calls for the destruction of the USA and Israel! We can also mention ISIS in that area as well! The war on Terror of 2001 fulfilled the prophecy of Daniel 11:44 to the letter!

“But tidings [calls for Jihad] out of the east and out of the north [Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan] shall trouble him [The President of the USA and his Western Allies of NATO]: therefore he shall go forth with great fury [because of the London Bombings, the USS Cole bombing and 911 in New York] to destroy, and utterly to make away many [the mission to get rid of Al-Qaida and the Taliban in 2001]”

It is no secret that Iran wants to control the Middle East. Bible prophecies show that Iran has its tentacles in the countries that surround Israel like Palestine and Lebanon. Iran funds and sponsors Hezbollah, Hamas among others in the Middle East like terror cells in Yemen and their presence in Syria etc.…

In Isaiah 14, the prophecy of “Palestina,” there is a “root” that God is going to eradicate (v.30), this, “…word rendered ‘root’ denotes properly the root of a plant, which being dried up or killed, the plant of course withers and dies. So God says that he would effectually and entirely destroy the power of the Philistines.” (Barnes’s Notes, emphasis added). This is Iran! How do we know? First, the power of the Palestinians today comes from Iran. “According to Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority, ‘Hamas is funded by Iran. ... Iran also supplies Hamas with military weaponry. Technologies provided include Fajr-5, M-75, and M-302 rockets, as well as drones.’’’ (“Iran: The Regional Power behind the Hamas War Effort”. Jerusalem Center For Public Affairs. Retrieved 18 May 2016, emphasis added). God says he is going to cause the power of Palestine (Iran) to dry up. Second, the reason the King of the North comes to save Judah is because of “tidings” out of the east and the north as shown by Daniel 11:44 (see below for further details).

How will he do this? Notice the text, “and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.” God says he will do it, but then he says, “HE will slay thy remnant” Who is this “He”? The King of the North. The “He” as we read in verse 29 is the “viper” that is stronger than Judah, and is Judah’s “root” which is the USA and NATO. So God is going to accomplish this through the King of the North.

In verse 31 it speaks of the “smoke” that comes from the “north” and Palestine is “dissolved.” The K& D commentary states, “Israel rises again, but Philistia perishes even to a root and remnant; and the latter again falls a victim on the one hand to the judgment of God (famine), and on the other to the punishment inflicted by the house of David [Modern Day Israel-USA and British] is led by House of David [see Jer 33]. The change of persons in Isa 14:30 is no synallage; but the subject to yaharōg (slays) is the basilisk, the father of the flying dragon.” (emphasis added).

So God says he will through “famine” and the “sword (slay)” will destroy the “root” or power of Palestine which is Iran. The “famine” can mean through the Iranian sanctions imposed upon them by the western countries that have affected Iran heavily, “Iran’s economy is crumbling after years of U.S. sanctions… The sanctions lowered Iran’s ability to sell oil and prevented them from repatriating money from energy sales… High unemployment rates are set to increase even further given Iran’s economic struggles…An estimated 12.4% of the population is expected to be out of work in 2021, according to IMF projections.” (Article; These 6 charts show how sanctions are crushing Iran’s economy CNBC Abagail NG). In Iran now, “Millions have been pushed into extreme poverty over the past year…US sanctions and the coronavirus pandemic have devastated the economy and spurred inflation — almost tripling the price of fresh fruit — the unemployed 47-year-old and his family survive on bread, potatoes and eggs and only then because he has received state “bonuses”, sold some home appliances and dipped into his savings.” (Financial Times Article; Spiralling poverty in Iran adds to pressure on regime, emphasis added).

Daniel 11:45 reveals that the King of the North will occupy Judah. Why do they occupy Judah? The context is because of “Tidings” out of the East and the North that “trouble” them (Dan 11:44).

Barnes comments, “There are some things which are clear, and which the honest principles of interpretation demand in this passage, such as the following: “(a) What is here stated was to occur after the rumor from the east and the north Dan 11:44 should call forth the person here referred to on this expedition [to set up his tabernacles in the Holy Land]” (emphasis added).

John Darby’s Synopsis, writes, “But, disturbed by tidings from the east and north, he sets up his tabernacles between Jerusalem and the sea ...This is the regular meaning of the Hebrew” (Footnote, emphasis added).

The troublesome reports “tidings” will be of Jerusalem-Israel being attacked and wounded. As Isaiah 14 says, Judah shall be “broken” (14:29).

Hosea 5:13 reveals a prophecy that shows the reason why NATO goes into Judah, “When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.” The Jamieson Fausset and Brown Commentary says, “Understand Judah as the nominative to ‘sent,’ Thus, as ‘Ephraim saw his sickness’ (the first clause) answers in the parallelism to ‘Ephraim went to the Assyrian’ (the third clause), so ‘Judah saw his wound’ (the second clause) answers to (Judah) ‘sent to king Jareb’ (the fourth clause).” (emphasis added).

Who is “king Jareb”? “Jareb ought rather to be translated, ‘their defender,’ literally; avenger (Jerome).” Who Defends the Israelis? The USA! The King of the North! Notice what Joseph Benson says in his commentary, “The word Jareb means one that will plead for a person, and defend his cause against any that may oppose him, or an avenger, or helper. And it does not appear to be here a proper name. Bishop Horsley renders it, The king who takes up all quarrels, and observes, ‘This describes some powerful monarch who took upon him to interfere in all quarrels between inferior powers, to arbitrate between them, and compel them to make up their differences upon such terms as he thought proper to dictate: whose alliance was, of course, anxiously courted by weaker states.”’ (emphasis added). This clearly describes the President of the USA and the Nato Alliance.

Here it reveals Judah seeing his “wound” and goes to the President of the USA asking for help; it says Judah “sent” to King Jareb. Ephraim went to Assyria, Judah sent to King Jareb.

Then the Text says “yet could he [The Great King] not heal you, nor cure you of your wound” not “them” and “their wound” meaning both Ephraim and Judah-Its just Judah he is the one with the wound not Ephraim, It is Judah that is weak and wounded. The King of the North is discussing the situation in Judah, then leading a force to occupy Judah (Daniel 11:45). The great “King” as he is called, the King of the North, God says, “yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.” (v.13) He could not help because the alliance is crumbling. “none shall rescue him” (Hosea 5:14). It will be at this time that the King of the North, “shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” NATO COMES TO AN END! Soon after this comes the great tribulation on Judah and Israel (Jer 30:5, 7; Daniel 12:1).

Again Hosea says, “For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.

“I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.” (vv.14-15). This is that affliction-the deadly wound that will tear apart the NATO alliance that we read in Jeremiah 30:14, 15 and in Numbers 24:24. As Daniel says, “yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him” (11:45).

Notice what the Jamieson Fausset and Brown commentary says, “return to my place — that is, withdraw My favor.” (Emphasis theirs) This happens when Michael takes away the divine protection over Israel “At that time” when NATO falls (Daniel 12:1).

“till they acknowledge their offence — The Hebrew is, ‘till they suffer the penalty of their guilt.”’ (Emphasis theirs). This is the time of the great tribulation which comes soon after, “and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time:” (Dan 12:1).

Afterwards, “and seek my face: in their affliction [the great tribulation] they will seek me early.” (Hosea 5:15). This happens at the second coming of Christ. (Jer 30:14-24; Hosea 6:1-2).

Isaiah also prophesied that the King of the North will come and repair Jerusalem and occupy the land, “And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate [Daniel 11:45].

“And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest [defences are damaged and weakened].

“Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.

“And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.

“Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool:” (22:7-11). The US and NATO come in occupy the land of Israel and Jerusalem an repair the city due to attacks from the “east” and the “north.” Trying to cure Judah of their “wound.”

The threats and attacks from Media and Persia-be it from Pakistan, Iran, or Afghanistan, will make the King of the North plant military Bases in Israel. Iran is the most likely nation to do this since they have a huge stake in the Middle East or maybe there will be a coalition with Afghanistan and Pakistan we will have to wait and see. But today with the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban and Iran in negotiations with the Taliban this could be a likely scenario.

As noted above God says “He” the king of the north will “slay” the remnant of the Palestinians “root”-its power which is Iran. A sword used for slaying is always a symbol of warfare. God is going to use the USA and NATO to accomplish it. As God says, in Jeremiah, “The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.

“Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;” (51:19-20).

In Zechariah the 9^th chapter here is another end time prophecy about Damascus and it says, “A declaration: this message from the LORD in the land of Hadrach, with Damascus its confederate, because the eyes of humanity will look to the LORD, along with those of all the tribes of Israel.” (ISV v.1). It says that Damascus is in a “confederate” with the “land of Hadrach.” The K&D Commentary identifies this land, “That Hadrach denotes a land or kingdom, is raised above all reach of doubt by the fact that 'erets (the land) is placed before it...As the name Hadrach or Chadrach never occurs again, and yet a city which gives its name to a land, and occurs in connection with Damascus, Hamath, Tyre, and Sidon, could not possibly have vanished so completely, that even the earlier Jewish and Christian commentators heard nothing of it, Chadrach can only be a symbolical name formed by the prophet himself (as Jerome maintained, according to a Jewish tradition)...But what land? The statement in the following sentence by no means compels us to think of a province of Syria...it is impossible to imagine any reason for the choice of a symbolical name for another district of Syria bordering upon Damascus and Hamath. The symbolical name rather points to the fact that the land of Hadrach denotes a territory, of which Damascus, Hamath, Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia formed the several parts...but can only come into consideration as enemies of Israel whose might was to be threatened and destroyed by the judgment. Consequently the land of Hadrach must denote a land hostile to the covenant nation or the kingdom of God, and can only be a symbolical epithet descriptive of the Medo-Persian empire, which is called sharp-soft or strong-weak on account of its inwardly divided character, as Hengstenberg and Kliefoth assume. Now, however difficult it may be satisfactorily to explain the reason why Zechariah chose this symbolical name for the Medo-Persian monarchy, so much is certain, that the choice of a figurative name was much more suitable in the case of the dominant empire of that time, than in that of any small country on the border of Damascus or Hamath. All the cities and land enumerated after ‘the land of Hadrach,’ as losing their glory at the same time, belonged to the MedoPersian monarchy.”(emphasis added). Persia-Iran is the land God is speaking of!

Zechariah 9 clearly is an end time prophecy (Read our Booklet Syria in Prophecy for details). The latter end of Verse 1 clearly reveals it, “when [“Then” see Strong’s #3588] the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD.” Of course this has not happened yet!

Notice this prophecy, “The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof:” What will “rest” on Hadrach (Persia) and Damascus? “God’s anger rests on those whom he punishes, Eze 5:13; Eze 16:42; Eze 24:13. And his rod, or his arm, rests upon his enemies, Psalm 125:3; Isa 30:23. See Newcome.” (Clarke’s Commentary; see also Pulpit Commentary and Adam Clarke’s Commentary). These two countries are confederates. Iran and Syria are in league with each other. Iran is a supporter of the Assad’s regime in Damascus. The Iranian army is in Damascus setting up proxies near the Golan Heights in Israel. Many times the Israelis have bombed the area because of Iranian activity. God shows that Iran as well as Damascus will have God’s wrath on them that will be accomplished by the NATO Alliance.

Jeremiah 49:23-27 describes the same prophecy as Zechariah 9 and it speaks of “Trouble on the sea,” (EWB) or “Concern” (LEB) which “cannot be quiet,” This is referring to a force off Syria’s Mediterranean coast. These forces are concerned with the situation in Syria and are “troubled” by it. Who is this off the sea coast of Syria? Prophecy indicates it is the House of Israel (USA and Britain)-The King of the North who is “Troubled” (Daniel 11:44).

God says “AND, I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.” God is going to, as the Moffat Translation puts it, “…fling fires of war upon Damascus’ walls and burn up all Benhadad’s palaces” What flings through the air and burns down buildings? Missiles! But not just Damascus but IRAN as well-The “land of Hadrach!”

After the embarrassment the USA and NATO just experienced with the pullout from Afghanistan, the enemies of the west have now embolden themselves seeing the weak leadership that now leads the world’s only superpower for the moment. With what happened in Afghanistan, do you really believe the US & NATO will let it happen again? Absolutely not! This is what makes Daniel 11:45 make more and more sense why they go into Israel with such zeal! Remember, the context of Daniel 11:45 is because of “tidings out of the east and out of the north” (v.44).

At the moment, we are hearing Iran forging ties with Afghanistan. Afghanistan is turning to China for economic and political guidance (see article; Taliban announces partnership with China by Post Millennial; Why Iran Is Actively Backing The Taliban For The First Time by Worldcrunch). Is this not “troublesome?” Is this not threatening US and NATO security?

Prophecies show that Iran will be attacked by the US & NATO and when that happens Isaiah says, “The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.”

The military power “the fortress” shall “cease” come to an end. The Hebrew word is, “mibtsâr mibtsârâh” (Strong’s #4013). It means, “a fortification, castle, or fortified city; figuratively a defender: - (de-, most) fenced, fortress, (most) strong (hold).” Here is the fulfillment of Daniel 11:45! The King of the North shall come to his end. Isn’t that the very spirit of NATO TO DEFEND EUROPE! This prophecy is specifically talking about the fall of NATO. The defender of Europe led by the USA will cease and come to its end! Gill says, “…this may be understood, not of that particular city and fortress only, but of all their strongholds, the singular being, put for the plural.” (Emphasis added). So this prophecy is speaking of all of NATO collapsing after the fall of Damascus by NATO! Not just Damascus but Iran as well (the land of Hadrach).

Damascus is attacked because Iran is there! Then NATO will fall due to a deadly blow from China, why? Iran is part of the SCO, an alliance with China! China’s security will be threatened due to NATO’s attack on Iran! God says, “All thy lovers [“Allies” Moffatt Translation] have forgotten thee [article 5 of NATO’S Charter forsaken]; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased…Why criest thou for thine affliction?” (Jer 30:14-15). This affliction is described in Numbers 24:24, “And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim [South China Sea], and shall afflict Asshur [German led EU], and shall afflict Eber [Hebrew Nations NATO], and he [Chittim Amalek (Gog) China] also shall perish for ever [see Ezekiel 38 and 39].”

The great prophecy of Ezekiel shows the destruction of the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand-the great dominions and crown colonies of the British Empire (Read our booklet China in Prophecy for details).

In this great alliance “Gog” China is a “guard” meaning the “leader” of all (38:7). In this alliance we see “Persia” (v.5). The Afghans already announced their partnership with China. Whatever is left of Iran after NATO “slays” it can also be a part of the alliance as well as western Pakistan-Persia!
